Part-time Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng.)

Programme description (brief)

The part-time Mechanical Engineering begins by covering the scientific and engineering basics. The last third of the course concentrates on a specialisation aimed at specific fields of duties in the relevant career fields of design technology and production technology as well as business organisation.

With the help of examples, the students learn how to apply engineering techniques to analyse technical processes, develop practical problem solutions and consider relations beyond the subject appropriately. The Master qualification opens up new career paths for higher service and doctorates.

The knowledge taught in the course avoids extremely specific knowledge from isolated areas of mechanical engineering, focussing instead on offering technical expertise and skills which can be of value in as many industrial fields as possible. The course also offers the chance to share in the technical practical knowledge of colleagues from other occupational fields.

The first 2 semesters of the Master Combined Course in Mechanical Engineering are held at the campus in Iserlohn, which is where students learn the basic general components necessary for all later specialisations. The three specialisations are then taught separately at our faculty in Lüdenscheid.

Target group

People working in (preferably) engineering fields who want to earn the qualification of Master of Engineering and in addition are aiming to achieve or build on a high managerial position.

Fields of study

  • Plastics Engineering

Materials Science with high-performance materials and hybrids, non-destructive testing, failure analysis, rheology, mold technology, simulation, testing methodology, interdisciplinary courses, e.g., mathematics, physics, statistics, quality control, and business administration.

  • Engineering Design

Product design, design strategy taking into account modern quality control measures and economic aspects, constructive design, gear technology, higher technical mechanics, fluid technology, measurement technique, PLC control as well as control engineering, CAD methodologies, human resource management, creativity / brainstorming, interdisciplinary courses, e.g., mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, materials science, and CAD.

  • Metal Forming Technology

Materials science with regard to the structure of the matter and materials, materials sciences of steels and non-ferrous metals, non-destructive testing, metal forming technology, process technology, composite materials, interdisciplinary courses, e.g., mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, and quality control.

  • Production (only on Meschede campus)

Apart from broaden the scientific and engineering foundations, the field of study “Production” also schedules subject contents which concentrate on the areas production and manufacturing with concretely defined working fields.

The three course specialisations “Modern Production Technology”, “Production Automation and Networking”, and “Production Organisation and Planning” offer a knowledge which can be implemented practically and that is required in a modern industrial environment in the Age of Industry 4.0.
