NRWege ins Studium – Scholarships for Refugees at Universities in NRW from 2020
Scholarships for students with refugee background
In the framework of the programme "NRWege ins Studium - integration of refugees at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia", the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences grants scholarships to students with refugee background with good to very good academic achievements. This programme is sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Starting in 2017, the universities in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are increasingly committed to integrating refugees who are willing and able to study into a study course.
After successfully completing language courses to prepare for university studies, the transition to a degree programme has repeatedly shown that there is a growing demand for support. Despite outstanding performances and high motivation, enrolled students with refugee background often face obstacles to financing their living costs, which are often impossible to overcome. These financial obstacles mean that despite a good prognosis of successfully completing a study course, studies cannot be even started or continued.
Therefore, one focus of the scholarship programme is on financing studies for particularly highly talented refugees in order to successfully integrate refugees who are willing and able to study in a long-term perspective into a study course at a university in NRW and to lead them to graduation.
Consequently, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences will be awarding study scholarships for the winter semester 2020/2021 and, from the summer semester 2021, also study entry scholarships for students with refugee background who are highly motivated and highly likely to succeed in their studies.
